Laptop Won't Turn On? When Board-Level Repair Beats Buying a New Laptop

A laptop that will not power on usually is not finished. Many "dead" laptops have one failed component on the motherboard, and board-level repair can fix it for a fraction of the cost of a new machine, with your files and setup untouched.

Try these checks first

  1. Different charger: a failed adapter is the simplest cause. Check that the charger light is on and the plug is not loose.
  2. Hard reset: unplug the charger, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then plug in and try again.
  3. External monitor: if you hear fans or see keyboard lights but the screen is black, connect an HDMI monitor. If you get a picture, the problem is the screen or cable, not the board.
  4. Remove accessories: unplug USB devices, docks and SD cards.

Signs of a motherboard fault

  • No lights and no fan at all, even with a known good charger
  • Charging light flashes, then turns off
  • Laptop powers on for a second, then shuts down
  • It got wet, or it died after a power surge
  • The charger gets hot or the light turns off when plugged into the laptop (possible short)

What board-level repair actually means

Instead of replacing the whole motherboard, our technicians diagnose the circuit and replace the individual failed part: a shorted capacitor, a charging IC, a power MOSFET, a BIOS chip or a damaged connector. That is microsoldering work done under a microscope, and it is what lets us fix boards that other shops call "not repairable".

Repair or replace?

Board repair usually makes sense when:

  • The laptop is a good model you want to keep (ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook, MacBook, gaming laptops)
  • A new motherboard is expensive or no longer available
  • You need the data on the internal drive, especially on MacBooks and ultrabooks with soldered storage

If the repair is not worth it, we will tell you, and you can look at our refurbished laptops instead.

Liquid spill? Act fast

Turn it off right away, unplug it, and do not try to power it on to test. Corrosion spreads over time, so the sooner a technician cleans the board, the better the chances.
